Inspiring Others -
The best way to learn is to teach. Here a student has an opportunity to teach another faculty member's daughter that white is the combination of all colors. The demonstration he provided amazed her and gave him a sense of pride, confidence, and purpose that isn't common in standard assessments of learning.

Student Design & Creation -
Students posing with engineering students from Virginia Tech's Chump Car team. My students designed, built, and installed the spoiler on the back of the race car that the students from Virginia Tech built and would go on to race the next day.

Student Designed Experiments -
Rather than have students simply collect data using the same standard high school laboratory heat insulators students designed and built their own adding variance, design thinking, and competition to a classic science lab. This student's insulator utilized building materials like PVC, construction foam, and sand.

A Team Approach -
The robotics team works together every year to build a competitive robot for USFIRST Robotics Competition. They learn principles of electrical, mechanical, and computer science engineering as well as how to properly conduct diagnostics, safely work with powerful machines, and how to work with a team that has numerous inter-dependencies.

Launching Projects -
Students learned about projectile motion, forces, construction, and design when they built water balloon launchers. This project served as a large incentive to demonstrate learning through performance, as the better the launchers performed the more likely they were to hit their targets: volunteer teachers and administrators.
